Varanasi: A jeweller from Paharganj area in Delhi was found hanging from the ceiling fan of a hotel room in Bhelupur on Tuesday night. The deceased identified as Sahil Malik (25) had arrived in Varanasi with his mother Prerna Malik on Monday.
According to police, Sahil had checked into the hotel under a false identity, posing as Gaurav Verma and had given his mother sleeping pills before taking the extreme step. A suicide note recovered from his room revealed that he had borrowed huge sums of money from multiple individuals and was facing increasing pressure to clear his dues.
Inspector Bhelupur VK Shukla on Thursday said that Sahil, a resident of Multani Dhanda in Paharganj, Delhi, had arrived in Varanasi on Monday with his mother and booked a room in a hotel posing as Gaurav Verma, a resident of Karol Bagh. On Tuesday, he returned to the hotel room with his mother after midnight. Officials added that after his mother went into a deep sleep due to consuming sleeping pills, he hanged himself.
The incident came to light when his mother discovered his body on Wednesday morning and alerted the hotel staff.Later, the hotel manager informed the Bhelupur police.
When Bhelupur police contacted Karol Bagh police, it came to light that Sahil, who owned a jewellery shop in Karol Bagh, Delhi, had taken loans worth crores from various people in Delhi, who had filed complaints against him.
Faced with mounting pressure, he had fled Delhi with his mother and checked into a hotel in Varanasi hotel under a changed identity, stating that he had to go to Bareilly after staying there.
Prerna informed the police that his father, Hans Datt, had died five years ago, while her younger son, aged around 14, lives with a relative in Delhi. She recalled that before returning to the hotel, Sahil had taken her to many temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, Durga Temple, and Sankat Mochan.
