Varanasi: District Police Of Mirzapur And Sonbhadra have been alerted. The bomb recovered from Varanasi-Mumbai Mahanagari Express on January 28 was, in all probability, planted at the Cheoki Railway station, reveal preliminary investigations.
Also, the bomb that was recovered at Manikpur matched the pipe bomb, which was recovered from a bus in Chunar (Mirzapur) in February 2013.
Similar bombs were later used during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Patna rally on October 27, 2013. These facts have come out of the investigation by police and anti-terror squad (ATS).
The ATS tracked the Ghazipur-based passengers who had noticed the bomb on Mahanagar Express and alerted the railway police when the train stopped at Manikpur. The youth told ATS officials that the bomb wasn't there when the train crossed Vindhyachal railway station in Mirzapur but they saw it later, when the train crossed Cheoki railway station.
Gelatin rod in the bomb and the threatening note recovered with the bomb point at the involvement of Left extremists, say ATS officials.
As far as the letter goes, it is ambiguous in the sense that it demands Rs 10 crore but fails to mention where to deliver the amount. That's why investigating agencies aren't ruling out the possibility of it being a prank. Cheoki railway station is not equipped with CCTV cameras so zeroing in on culprits is difficult.
IG S.K. Bhagat said that the district police of Mirzapur and Sonbhadra (where the explosives are sold for mining purposes), have been alerted. Police have also been directed to coordinate with ATS and put a check on syphoning of explosives for terror activities.
