5 docs booked as woman dies during surgery in Ballia
Varanasi: In another shocker from Ballia, a 24-year-old woman died during a kidney stone surgery at a private hospital in the Kotwali area on Sunday evening. The incident sparked protests by her family, which turned violent as police used force to disperse the crowd. This is the third such incident in Ballia within a month, raising concerns about medical negligence.ASP (southern) Kripa Shankar said based on the complaint of deceased Anisha's husband Shivanshu Rai, police lodged an FIR on charges of murder against five doctors, including Jyotsana Singh, Apurva Singh, Deepak Singh, Sanjay Singh and Rohan Gupta. Anisha was admitted to Apurva Hospital, where she died during surgery, he said, adding that further investigation is in progress.Anisha was taken to the hospital on Sunday afternoon, but things took a turn when doctors called for backup and suggested transferring her to Lucknow. Her husband claimed they offered money and an ambulance, but when he refused, they broke the news of her death due to excessive bleeding.According to the FIR, the complainant alleged that Rs 1 lakh was charged for the procedure. He claimed the doctors had assured a laser-based surgery, but instead performed a major abdominal operation, leading to her death. The news of her death spread like wildfire, and hundreds of people gathered around the hospital. Initially, Kotwali cops tried to handle the situation. As tensions rose, ADM Anil Kumar, ASP, and other senior officials rushed to the spot. A heavy police presence was deployed to manage the crowd. The mob demanded immediate action against the doctors. Despite repeated efforts by officials, the mob refused to budge, trying to storm the hospital. Cops were seen waving canes to disperse the crowd. Tensions eased around midnight, allowing officials to send the body for a post-mortem.The CMO office area has become infamous for quacks performing surgeries, including C-sections. On Feb 23, a pregnant woman died during a C-section at a clinic of a quack near the CMO office. During the probe, it became clear that the hospital was unregistered and the surgery was performed by a quack. On March 13, the bodies of a woman and her newborn twin daughters were found dumped in the toilet of a private hospital located near the CMO office. After the woman experienced labour pain, the village's ASHA worker, instead of taking her to the community health centre of Dubahad or the govt women's hospital, took her to a private hospital, where its owner's son conducted a C-section.
