VGL plans to ramp up CBG use amid gas supply concerns

Vadodara: Vadodara Gas Ltd (VGL) is exploring ways to increase the use of compressed biogas (CBG) in its distribution network as part of its push towards sustainability and to offset supply uncertainties.The city gas distributor, a joint venture of GAIL Gas Ltd and Vadodara Municipal Corporation, currently injects around 5,000kg of CBG daily into its network, primarily in the Gajrawadi area. The fuel is sourced from three private suppliers under the Centre's CBG synchronisation scheme, with GAIL acting as the nodal agency.Under the arrangement, suppliers raise invoices with VGL, which are then processed through GAIL. Officials said daily supply varies but remains close to 5,000kg.Sources said the use of CBG is being promoted to reduce dependence on imported natural gas while supporting cleaner energy goals. Firms producing CBG also benefit from central financial assistance and generate by-products such as organic manure from biomass.VGL is now considering increasing CBG injection by 1,000 to 1,500kg per day. The move comes amid concerns over fluctuating natural gas supplies due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.Officials said the company is currently managing demand but will need to scale up supply as the number of connections rises in the city. Demand has also grown following measures to regulate LPG cylinder distribution.
