VADODARA/ ANAND: Anand police arrested four members of a gang, who allegedly blackmailed men after befriending them on a social networking app for gay, bisexual and transgender people by recording their objectionable videos and extorting money from them.
Based on a complaint filed by a man from Surat, the cops arrested four accused including three natives of Surendranagar and one from Botad town.
On July 23, the man from Surat, who works at a private firm, had come to Anand to meet his relative. He met one of the accused who after a video call invited him to a hotel.
“The accused recorded objectionable videos of the complainant. They threatened him, extorted Rs 4,500 cash and Rs 40,000 worth of gold chain from him. The accused had also threatened to make the videos viral on social media platforms and demanded Rs 5 lakh. The complainant later registered a complaint with Anand town police station,” said deputy superintendent of police B D Jadeja.
“Based on human inputs and technical surveillance, we arrested four men while the fifth accused is likely to be arrested soon,” said Jadeja. The accused were identified as Meru Rabari, Shakti Bajipura and Tanveer Ahmed Juneja — all residents of Surendranagar and Aasif Ali Liyakat Andani, from Botad. The cops are searching for Kuldeep Charola, another resident of Surendranagar. “We are also investigating whether the accused had lured other men as well,” he said.
