VADODARA: Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has decided to give scholarships and awards to junior cricketers in the memory of late Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, scion of royal Gaekwad family. The association will set up a corpus of Rs one crore and the income generated out of it will be used for giving scholarships and awards. Ranjitsinh recently passed away after fighting a long battle with renal cancer.
His son Samarjitsinh is currently the vice-president of BCA.
"We thought it would be the best tribute to the scion of the royal family. The scholarships and awards would go to the promising youngsters," said BCA secretary Sanjay Patel. The decision was taken in the managing committee meeting that was held on Thursday evening. M S University (MSU) vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh too attended the meeting for the first time.
The association has also decided to buy about 25,000 square-feet land in the city to construct a state-of-art gymnasium of its own. The association currently has a gymnasium in Motibaug Ground but it is not adequately equipped. "We have tied up with three different gyms to give good facilities to our players. We have now decided to have our own gym as even Bhelps in getting good equipment," Patel added.
BCA has also made some changes in Ranji selection committee by picking up ex-India wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia and former Baroda captain Jacob Martin for the first time. C R Mohite will continue as chairman of the selection committee. Former Baroda player Connor Williams has been made chairman of junior selection committee. BCA will also set up the long due state cricket academy in the coming months.
