UDAIPUR: After three days of faking 'psychic' act, the 22-year-old murder accused Divya Kothari finally confessed on Monday to the police that the real motive behind murdering lawyer Ruchita Gupta.
In his confession, Divya said that he had a deep crush on Ruchita `aunty' since long as she was a frequent visitor at their flat being a close friend of his mother.
Divya had secretly nurtured intense feelings for Ruchita inside his heart when the couple had been their next door neighbour in the same apartment.
According to police, Ruchita and her husband K B Gupta owned their own flat on the 8th floor where Divya and his parents too lived. Later for some unknown reasons, the couple had sold the flat few months back and taken up a rented one on the 7th floor.
“On December 1, Divya had seen and even spoke to K B Gupta outside the apartment when the latter was going to college to attend classes. Knowing that Ruchita would be alone inside her flat, Divya had gone there on the pretext of playing with their peta star turtle,“ an officer said.
He clicked pictures of the turtle on his mobile, raised the voice of the television and went inside the kitchen where Ruchita was working. Divya grabbed her from behind and started touching all over her body which shocked the woman. She resisted his attempts upon which Divya caught hold of a spanner and hit hard on her head. “The accused then dragged her to the bedroom and tried to molest her. Ruchita struggled hard to save herself but Divya was too heavy who hit her again and again until she fell dead inside the room,“ one of the members of the investigating team told TOI. His earlier version of having committed the act in a fit of depression and under the influence of poison was totally false.
“He didn't consume any poison before the murder but later when he realized what he had done, he attempted to kill himself many times but failed,“ an officer said. When asked why he put up all the `psychic' act, the accused said he felt he could escape a severe punishment if he proved himself mentally unfit.
The police had for three days taken a softer approach believing Divya to be suffering from some psychotic disorder, however, his behaviour and understanding of things appeared contradictory . The cops turned stricter and Divya broke down finally .
