Work begins for precast subway on Sanjeevi Nagar level crossing in Trichy

Trichy: Southern Railway's Trichy division has approved two precast limited-use subways to replace the Sanjeevi Nagar manned level crossing near Trichy Town railway station, a move expected to ease traffic between Rockfort areas and the Trichy–Chennai National Highway (NH). Work on one subway has already begun under Southern Railway's construction wing, while the second will be taken up shortly by the Trichy division.Level crossing (LC) 250, located between Srirangam and Trichy Town stations at the end of the platforms, serves as a key link for two-wheelers, cars and autorickshaws travelling between Sanjeevi Nagar on the Trichy–Chennai NH and East Boulevard Road, Rockfort and Chathiram bus stand areas. Frequent closures for train movements have forced commuters to use longer and congested city routes.
The demand for a proper subway had been raised persistently by residents and public representatives, including Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, following which railways initiated the project. "Work for one of the two precast structures is underway. A retaining wall will come up along with a drain canal passing near the LC to prevent seepage," a railway official said. Two box-type limited-use subways will be constructed to bypass the manned crossing equipped with an electric barrier. One subway will handle inbound traffic and the other outbound vehicular movement between Sanjeevi Nagar and East Boulevard Road near Trichy Town station. The Trichy Corporation has also been requested to divert a drain running close to the railway tracks. Once the precast units are ready, railway line blocks will be announced and installation is expected to be completed in less than two days, railway sources said.
