Trichy: Volunteer movement ‘Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam' launched an awareness campaign in Trichy on Monday to encourage students to vote in the upcoming assembly election. They sensitized the public against accepting money or material benefits in exchange for their votes.
K C Neelamegam, state treasurer of the iyakkam, led the campaign, near Chathiram bus stand, targeting students, and urging everyone to exercise their voting right.
Volunteers pasted stickers in crowded public places bearing slogans such as "My vote is my right", "My vote is not for sale", "Let us fulfill our duty to vote", and "Let us change the foolishness of voting for money".
R Elango, state deputy secretary of the iyakkam, stated that the students could vote for anyone they wished, but must not accept money or gifts in return. He highlighted that voting for money aids corruption and is equivalent to sharing corrupt money.
The volunteers resolved to continue the awareness campaign. They planned to conduct outreach in crowded public places such as sports grounds, reading rooms, markets, shopping complexes, and other similar locations.
