TRICHY: Union minister of state for education Subhas Sarkar reviewed the Union government - sponsored schemes here on Monday.

He flagged off a 5km unity run held on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel which is observed as Unity Day. The run, which began at National Institute of Technology-Trichy, saw the participation of more than 500 students, faculty and officials.

Sarkar inspected the institute's sports infrastructure. He, along with the director and other officials, reviewed the institute's activities as regards implementing National Education Policy. He also inaugurated an exhibition, ‘Sardar Patel – the architect of unification,’ at the Orion building.

Addressing students, Sarkar said ‘reform, perform and transform’ is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘mantra’ for the uplift of the country. It elucidates the support given to entrepreneurs, measures taken to ensure women’s development and government schemes.

Later in the day, Sarkar convened a meeting with collector M Pradeep Kumar and reviewed various schemes sponsored by the union government, including the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman scheme being implemented in government and aided schools in Trichy district. On Tuesday, the union minister will be visiting Kendriya Vidyalayas functioning in Trichy.
