Trichy: Two people were killed in separate road accidents on the Trichy-Chennai national highway within city limits between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The identity of one of the deceased is yet to be established as the body was disfigured in the impact.
Police said the first accident occurred near the railway Road Over Bridge (RoB) at Palpannai around 9.15pm on Saturday. K Murugesan, 59, of Gandhi Market, was riding a two-wheeler from Sanjeevi Nagar junction towards Palpannai. M Gopinath, 20, of Perambalur, who was riding a sports bike in the same direction, allegedly rammed Murugesan's vehicle from behind while approaching the RoB.
Both riders were thrown off their vehicles. An unidentified vehicle subsequently ran over Gopinath, killing him on the spot. Murugesan sustained a fractured leg and was admitted to hospital.
In the second incident, reported around 2am on Sunday, an unidentified man aged about 50 was standing near the Mannarpuram RoB on the Trichy-Chennai highway when he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle. He died on the spot.
City police said efforts are on to establish the identity of the deceased and trace the vehicles involved. The traffic north and south investigation wings are probing the accidents.
