Trichy residents protest bad roads, plant paddy seedlings
Trichy: Condemning Trichy corporation for the bad road condition and lapses in basic amenities in areas falling under ward 41, DYFI cadres and residents carried out a protest demonstration by planting paddy seedlings on a muddy road near Thiruverumbur. They urged the corporation to complete the pending underground drainage (UGD) work and sought the officials to repair damaged roads.
Protesters said that residents of Kamaraj Nagar, Puttrukoil street, Surulikoil street, AR Nagar, and TR Nagar abutting Thiruverumbur to Navalpattu Main Road were enduring the bad road conditions for about five years now, ever since UGD work was initiated in the ward.
Claiming the UGD work is still incomplete, residents said that the damaged roads were not redeveloped properly by the local body. During the recent rains, two-wheelers and autorickshaws were unable to reach the streets due to muddy roads, they added.
As DYFI cadres announced a protest demonstration on Monday, Trichy corporation was said to have quickly carried out patch work on the damaged roads. However, residents were not satisfied with the patch work, and launched the protest.
"Due to the bad conditions of our roads, waste collection vehicles are not reaching our houses. Even street lights are also inadequate in the peripheral wards. Open drains are not being desilted periodically," P Lenin, district president, DYFI Trichy said.
Protesters also sought drinking water connections to all houses in the peripheral areas. Corporation officials conducted a peace talk with the residents and assured to initiate repair work.
