Trichy residents irked over new road work sans milling
Trichy: Residents have opposed the hasty road construction work taken up by Trichy corporation without milling the old and damaged surfaces in Cantonment area. Stating that lapses in road work may affect the quality of new roads, they urged the corporation to ensure procedural processes are adhered to while relaying the roads."Williams Road was swept and watered today, subsequently bitumen was spread and paved. Two days back, a similar method of hasty road relaying resulted in inferior quality. At present, road laying is done too quickly. Milling the surface of the old road was not at all done," C Balasubramanian, a road safety activist, said. Sources said that the road work was sanctioned last financial year, and a work order was issued before the model code of conduct. However, residents said that without milling, road height would increase and cause inundation of rainwater in low-lying areas. Activists also questioned whether the new road can bind on the old surface without milling. They urged the work to be carried out at leisure after election. "The old road was already damaged for the UGD and drinking water pipeline works, so milling was not necessary. Quality of the road work will not be compromised. Wherever milling is essential, we are carrying out the process," a corporation official said.
