Trichy city police have announced traffic diversions in the vehicular movement between Panjapur KKBT and Central bus stand for the demolition and reconstruction of the Koraiyar river bridge near the Panjapur green park. The diversions will come into effect from Friday and likely to last till Jan 2027.
Police said all vehicles commuting from Panjapur integrated bus terminus and Viralimalai will be diverted via Chettiyapatti, Edamalaipatti Pudur (E Pudur), Crawford, and Aristo bridge (Trichy junction RoB) to reach Central bus terminus. Vehicles approaching Panjapur integrated bus terminus and Viralimalai from the city will be diverted via Aristo bridge, Mannarpuram junction, and Panjapur semi-ring road junction. Vehicles heading to Krishnapuram, E Pudur, Ramchandra Nagar, and Anbu Nagar can continue to use the Old Madurai Road (E Pudur Main Road), but the road will be blocked near the Krishnapuram police checkpost to facilitate the construction work for the new four-lane bridge.
The new Koraiyar bridge proposed at Rs 23.5 crore will have a median and pedestrian platform. Construction work for retaining walls has begun. While the bridge is expected to be opened for traffic by Jan 2027, the state highways department is planning to complete the project by Oct 2026, considering its importance in linking Panjapur KKBT and the truck terminal with Central bus stand.
