Three arrested for theft of gold from army man’s wife

Trichy: A special team formed by the Trichy city police to crack the case of theft of 27 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the wife of an army man near Chathiram bus stand on March 12, arrested three people involved in the crime. Addressing reporters, commissioner of police, M Sathiya Priya said on Wednesday that team arrested the accused Ravi and two women who were on the run. Priya said that the three accused belonging to the same family were adept at lifting bags from the passengers in crowded places.“The accused knew the knack of cutting the bags by diverting the attention of the targets,” CoP said. Police managed to recover 23 sovereigns from Ravi. Priya said that the arrest of two more people will give them more information about their handiwork. Police suspect that the trio may have been involved in 10 more attention diversion cases. On the frequent thefts in Central and Chathiram bus stands, the commissioner said that additional patrols of 10 personnel in each bus stand have been deployed to prevent such crimes. She also said that the police have asked the district administration to provide them 1,600 more CCTV cameras in addition to the existing 1,600 for better surveillance in poorly-lit, crime-prone areas etc. It may be noted that V Arun Sundari, 40, of Amman Nagar in Perambalur district and her husband a havildar in Indian Army posted in Rajasthan had visited Trichy on March 12 to buy some jewellery. They had also carried with them 27 sovereigns of gold jewellery from their house, fearing a likely burglary. When she alighted from a bus at Main Guard gate, she found the bag of gold ornaments missing. Acting on her complaint, the Fort police took action. Priya formed a special team. The team checked the CCTV footages in Chathiram bus stand. They found the suspicious movements of three people in the footages on March 12 and 15 leading to the headway in the case. In the past three months, the city police have cracked 35 out of the 43 robberies, said Priya.
