Trichy: A Trichy court on Tuesday awarded three years imprisonment to the driver of a zonal deputy tahsildar for conniving with his boss in demanding and accepting bribe for removing names from a joint land title in Trichy.
The special court for prevention of corruption Act in Trichy convicted M Arumugam for aiding then Manapparai zonal deputy tahsildar S Upagaram in taking bribe of 10,000 from Muthu of Manapparai area in 2008. Arumugam was working on a contractual basis.
The court sentenced Arumugam to undergo three years of jail term and imposed a fine of 10,000. In case of not paying the fine, he should undergo three more months of jail term.
DSP G Manikandan of Directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC), Trichy, said on Tuesday that Muthu applied for removing the names of his two elder brothers from the joint patta. Upagaram demanded 10,000 for removing the names.
After receiving the bribe, he passed it on to his driver Arumugam to keep it with him. DVAC team caught them red-handed.
The charge against Upagaram was abated as he died during trial in 2013.
