Recurring projects, missing promises mark Trichy civic budget
Trichy: Several proposals featured in earlier city budgets have either been repeated or omitted in the 2026–27 budget tabled on Thursday.Projects such as a larger integrated office complex for the Trichy Corporation and construction of bridges across the Uyyakondan canal have once again found mention. However, proposals announced in previous years — including dedicated food courts, libraries, and indoor sports stadiums in all five zones — were absent this time. The budget earmarked ₹75 crore for constructing an integrated office complex on Bharathidasan Road for the corporation's main office, a proposal that has appeared in earlier budgets but is yet to materialise. Similarly, two minor bridges across the Uyyakondan canal near Raja Colony and Thennur Anna Nagar have been proposed at ₹1.2 crore and ₹1.7 crore, respectively. Though tenders were floated earlier, the bridges aimed at easing traffic congestion have not been executed so far. "Fund crunch is the reason for not fulfilling certain projects mentioned in previous budgets. By generating additional revenue through renting new but vacant commercial complexes and mobilising funds through deposits received while commissioning UGD and STP projects, we are confident of accomplishing the pending promises in the new financial year," Mayor Mu. Anbalagan said.
