Trichy: Posters condemning Mayiladuthurai MP R Sudha for backing the nomination of party candidate Y N Jamal Muhammad Younoos from Thanjavur district, have appeared in public spots throughout Mayiladuthurai town. The move triggered unrest among local Congress party workers.
Younoos, 39, has been fielded as the Congress candidate for the Mayiladuthurai assembly constituency in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election. Ever since his nomination was announced, discontent has been brewing among several party workers in the area.
Over the past few days, posters criticizing Sudha were spotted across key locations, such as the bus stand, railway station, and even on the walls of government offices. These posters opposed the selection of Younoos.
The posters, attributed to the ‘Mayiladuthurai District Congress Committee All Divisions', described the nominee as an unfamiliar figure who had never contributed to the party and possessed no knowledge about the constituency. They accused the leadership of overlooking deserving local Congress aspirants from the district and sharply rebuked lawyer Sudha for endorsing the decision.
When asked about the controversy, S Bhanusekar, Mayiladuthurai district president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee said, "A few dissatisfied functionaries within the party could have been responsible for issuing such statements and pasting the posters. He added that the new candidate is capable, maintains good relations, and mingles well with party workers."
On Monday, Younoos was formally introduced among the party functionaries and cadres.
