Plan afoot to upgrade Srirangam Dr Rajan school to high school

Trichy: The district education department has sent a proposal to the senior authorities to upgrade the Dr Rajan Corporation Middle School in Srirangam to a high school and use an unutilised school building at Moolathoppu for taking classes for senior students, said M Sivakumar, chief educational officer.
If the proposal is accepted, Dr Rajan Corporation School will be the first government high school in Srirangam proper.
The unutilised school building at Lakshmi Nagar in Moolathoppu was completed at a cost of 1.6 crore in August 2018. “The building was supposed to be used by the Ayyanar High School near Melur. However, parents of the students opposed the move stating that the new campus was four kilometres away from the existing campus. So, it remained unused since its construction, but for stocking textbooks and other items occasionally,” said an education department official.
In this situation, Srirangam residents had been seeking the district administration to put the building to some use.
Dr Rajan Corporation Middle School has a strength of around 600 students this academic year. About 200 students are enrolled in Class VI to Class VIII. As the core Srirangam area lacks a government high school, students passing out from three middle schools are forced to enrol in schools situated in far areas.
The official said, “There are only private and government-aided high schools in Srirangam area. A new government high school would benefit around 300 students, especially students from families belonging to the low-income group, passing out of three middle schools. In future, the proposed high school could be upgraded to a higher secondary school.”
