New ashramam head takes charge

Trichy: Post the demise of Sri Ranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan, who was the 11th head of the Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam, Sri Yamunachariyar on Sunday assumed charge as the new ‘Andavan Swamigal’ (pontiff) for the ashram. Several poojas were done during the function which was held from 6.30 am to 8.30 am.

The new pontiff, Yamunachariyar, who is 50 years old, would be called as Sri Varaha Mahadesikan. He hails from Srimushnam in Cuddalore district and is one of the sons of Sri Ranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan. Yamunachariyar is said to be known for his proficiency in Tamil and Sanskrit. He was chosen as ‘Andavan Swamigal’ post several ‘sishyas’ of the ashram expressed their wish that he takes over as the new head. The tradition of appointing ‘Andavan Swamigal’ begun in the 18th century in the year 1701 in the ashram.

The previous pontiff, Sri Ranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan, at the age of 84, passed away in Chennai on March 19 this year. TNN
