Guv’s syndicate nominee quits scrutiny panel for registrar, CoE
Trichy: The process of appointing a regular registrar, controller of examinations, and director of Centre for Distance Education at Bharatidasan University has hit an early hiccup after the governor's nominee in the syndicate excused herself from the scrutiny committee allegedly over differences with another member over marking ‘non-eligible' candidates.Sources said S Amudha, who is part of the five-member scrutiny committee and also a governor's nominee in the syndicate, informed the VC committee members, including convener E Sundaravalli, that she be relieved from the scrutiny committee. The VC committee has been running the university affairs since the previous vice-chancellor retired in Feb 2024.
University sources said when the scrutiny committee met on Feb 9, there were differences between Amudha and another member over marking ‘non-eligible' candidates. Subsequently, the member did not sign the final report that was to be placed before the next syndicate for further process, such as constituting an interview committee for selection. The scrutiny committee includes A Senthil Rajan, registrar of Alagappa University; two former registrars of BDU — C Thiruchelvam (syndicate member) and G Gopinath; S Amudha, the governor's nominee in the syndicate; and K Suriyan, chair of School of Social Sciences."The issue was forwarded to the registrar for necessary action. Ideally, there should be an inquiry before the next move," a VC committee member said. While it is still not clear whether a fresh committee will be constituted, a senior official told TOI that "a solution will be arrived at soon in the coming days." "This is where a VC is needed because the issue would have been resolved then and there," a retired university professor said. Sources said that 18 applications were received for the post of registrar, 16 for controller of examinations, and 13 for director of CDE. After the syndicate approved the move on Sept 22, advertisements for these critical posts that have been lying vacant for years were issued on Dec 12, and applications were received until Jan 12. The issue of not having full-time officials in these posts has gained greater significance especially due to absence of VC at the university since Feb last year.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Valentine's day wishes, messages and gift idea !
