TRICHY: Teachers serving in the government schools for over a decade want to be promoted to government colleges as assistant professors.
The teachers who fulfill the basic eligibility criteria for assistant professors urged state government to alter mode of selection and allowing them to teach in colleges.
While the demand has been raised for almost a year now, around 1,200 teachers under the banner of Tamil Nadu NET, SET and P hD teachers Association (TNSPTA) decided in their state general body meeting on Sunday to attract attention of the government towards their demands through demonstrations in Chennai.

Calling for amending the selection process which doesn’t consider their teaching experience in schools for appointments in colleges, they sought 50 per cent reservation in appointments of assistant professors across the state.
“Few other states in the country including Andhra Pradesh allows its school teachers, those who fulfill eligibility criteria, to get into colleges,” said state president P Jawahar adding that there is no reason why we should not get the same when we have cleared NET, SET and P hD which is required to become assistant professor.
K Pushparaj, a PG teacher from Samayapuram said that most of the post graduate teachers retire without promotions.

+The association, a few months ago, had met the chief minister and the school education minister with their demands. The government, however, has asked them to wait till the redeployment of excess staffs from Annamalai University to other state universities is done.
Opposing the policy decision of the government, Jawahar said that Annamalai University staff should not be redeployed as it would affect new appointments in other universities if the vacancies are filled.
Urging for creating posts in the newly opened government colleges and university constituent colleges, TNSPTA has declared to stage demonstration in January in Chennai stressing on their demands.
