64-year-old man booked for assaulting TVK woman cadre during vote canvassing in Trichy
TRICHY: A 61-year-old resident of Sheshayee Nagar in Trichy has been booked for allegedly abusing and assaulting TVK women cadres who were canvassing for votes on Wednesday night. A TVK functionary was also booked for allegedly assaulting the senior citizen based on a counter-complaint.
The accused has been identified as K. Sivakumar, a resident of Shenbagaraman Street in Sheshayee Nagar near KK Nagar.
According to sources, C. Vellaisamy, TVK’s Trichy Airport Area secretary, along with a group of party workers, including several women, was engaged in door-to-door vote canvassing in Sheshayee Nagar around 8.30 pm for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While the group was passing by Sivakumar’s house, he allegedly scolded them and criticised TVK president Vijay.
A heated verbal altercation broke out between Sivakumar and the TVK cadres. Sivakumar allegedly abused Vellaisamy and other party members and threw a wooden log at one of the women. The woman sustained an injury to her right elbow and was admitted to Trichy Government Hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, Vellaisamy lodged a complaint at KK Nagar Police Station. The cadres demanded that the accused be summoned immediately for interrogation.
An argument ensued when the police informed them that elderly persons are not called or interrogated after 6 pm. After the police assured that Sivakumar would be called in for questioning at the earliest, the TVK workers dispersed.
A case was registered under Sections 296(b) and 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abuse and voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon, and under Section 4 of the TNPHW Act for harassment of women.
Sivakumar also filed a counter-complaint against TVK functionary Vellaisamy, alleging that he assaulted him with a flagstick. Based on this, a case was registered against Vellaisamy under Sections 191(2), 296(b), 115(2), and 351(2) of the BNS, which pertain to rioting, verbal abuse, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation.
