Trichy: A 64-year-old resident of Sheshayee Nagar in Trichy was booked on charges of abusing and assaulting TVK members who were canvassing for votes on Wednesday night. A TVK functionary was also booked following a counter-complaint from the senior citizen.
Police said C Vellaisamy, TVK's Trichy airport area secretary, and a group of party workers including women were engaged in door-to-door canvassing for assembly elections at Sheshayee Nagar around 8.30pm. When they passed the elderly man, Sivakumar, he criticised TVK president Vijay.
A heated verbal altercation broke out between Sivakumar and TVK members. Sivakumar allegedly abused Vellaisamy and other party members and threw a wooden log at one of the women, who suffered an injury on her right elbow, and was admitted to Trichy GH, police said.
Subsequently, Vellaisamy lodged a complaint to KK Nagar police, who registered a case against Sivakuma under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abuse and voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapon and under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act, 1998.
Sivakumar filed a counter-complaint against Vellaisamy alleging that the latter assaulted him with a flag stick. Police registered a case against Vellaisamy under BNS for rioting, verbal abuse, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. Police are investigating.
