Trichy: Police arrested two Bihar residents, including a minor boy, for trying to cheat a woman of her gold chain under the guise of cleaning the jewel, at Samuthiram village near Manapparai on Friday.
According to sources, M Raghunandan, 36, of Rahulsatpur in Bihar and his 14-year-old nephew visited the house of S Rani Chandrika, 47, at Gandhi Nagar on Thursday morning. They told the woman that they would clean all the dirt from gold chains.The woman gave them her chain weighing 18gm. As soon as they put the jewellery into a liquid, a part of it dissolved. Rani quickly called her neighbours. They inquired the duo and found out that they were planning to steal gold from unsuspecting people. The residents handed over the two to Manapparai police. Sources said around three gm of gold had dissolved in the liquid.
Manapparai inspector Gopi said the duo had been in Tiruppur and Trichy for the past three years. They had no previous criminal record.
