Trichy: More than 10 days after the governor's syndicate nominee in the panel for scrutiny of registrar, controller of examinations (COE), and director for centre of distance education (CDE) appointments at Bharathidasan University walked out, the university administration cancelled the panel and ordered the formation of a fresh committee.
S Amudha, the governor's committee had walked out on Feb 9 over the issue of marking certain candidates as ‘non-eligible'. In this backdrop, an official communication from the university sent on Feb 20 to the concerned members stated that the existing committee had been cancelled for "administrative reasons" and a fresh committee constituted. The new committee, which is scheduled to meet on March 3, includes A Senthil Rajan, registrar of Alagappa University; V Rajesh Kannan, VC committee member at Bharathidasan University (BDU); S Mohan, governor's nominee in the syndicate; E Ram Ganesh, senior professor, department of educational technology; and N Sumathi, syndicate member.
Even as the new committee was constituted on Friday, several academicians questioned the inclusion of a VC committee member in the scrutiny panel. "I have differences over its formation and have notified the same to registrar R Kalidasan. There should be an inquiry into why the earlier committee was cancelled before constituting a new one," said a senior member of the new panel.
"Ideally, a VC committee should not include one of its own members in the scrutiny committee. This appears to be an attempt to delay the process," a retired senior university professor said.
K Pandiyan, former AUT president, said, "The very formation of a new committee suggests that there was an inquiry by the higher education department. However, it is unfortunate that even a scrutiny committee, which is a small part of the process, is riddled with internal politics. If this is the situation now, one can imagine how the appointment process will unfold."
As reported earlier by TOI, the registrar's communication stated that 18 applications were received for the post of registrar, 16 for controller of examinations, and 13 for director of the Centre for Distance Education. Sources said one of the applicants of the registrar also incudes school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyamozhi's guide.
