THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The wife of a prominent businessman at Nedumangad died on Thursday after the car she drove turned turtle and plunged into a ditch at Pathamkallu near Nedumangad. Police identified the deceased as Geetha, wife of Subrahmanian, the proprietor of RK Stores, Nedumangad. Subrahmanian is an office-bearer of the Nedumangad unit of Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi.
Police said the accident took place around 4.45am when she was driving from Nedumangad to the city. She is believed to have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve at Maruthinakam near Pathamkallu. Geetha's daughter Sivapriya and nephew
Sanjay Krishna, both aged 16, escaped with minor injuries.
Relatives said the trio was going to an ashram at Thirumala. She used to visit the ashram every week. There was a sack of rice in the car.
The children were to be dropped at their tuition class on the way.
"A Tamil Nadu registration truck was parked on the roadside at the curve," said Subhash Chandran, her brother-in-law, quoting eyewitnesses. Geetha may have noticed the truck only when she came close and may have swiftly turned the car to the right, plunging into the ditch. The car toppled over and stopped after hitting a coconut tree, Subhash Chandran said.
Geetha's son Sivasankar is pursuing higher studies in Canada. The cremation will be held at Kulavikkonam near Nedumangad on Saturday.
