Wall collapses in rain, kills mother & kids

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, a woman and her two children died after a retaining wall collapsed over their house during heavy rain at Chembakasserikonam near Karakulam here on Thursday.
Sajina (26) wife of Shihabudeen and her children, Shafina (3) and Mohammed Shaheen (6 months) are the deceased. Sajina’s four-year-old son Shifan was also at home. He suffered serious injuries and is admitted to SAT Hospital for women and children here.Shihabudeen was away at work when the mishap occurred.
According to police, the mishap occurred around 4.15pm. The house was situated on an uphill while the house adjacent to it was on an elevated platform. They had built a retainer wall and had filled the land with earth on which the house was constructed.
During the heavy rain on Thursday, water seeped in ,weakening the base as well as the retaining wall. Soon, the wall gave in, causing a mini landslide. The house on the plot too suffered partial damages.
Sajina’s house was completely damaged in the event. The rescue workers pulled out all the four after toiling for over an hour. Though they were rushed to Medical College Hospital, the doctors declared the baby brought dead. Soon, Sajina and Shafina too succumbed to their injuries.
The police added that the residents of the nearby house were not at home and hence they escaped the tragedy.
