Sexual abuse: Man gets 8 years in jail

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A fast-track special court in the district sentenced a 22-year-old man to eight-year imprisonment on Saturday. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for sexually harassing a minor girl inside a moving bus in 2020.
Safdar Sudheer of Alummoottil House at Ilappennoor in Chadayamangalam was sentenced by judge R Sudarshanan.
In default of payment of the fine amount, the accused shall undergo additional imprisonment for seven more months.
The incident happened on January 6, 2020, in a bus while the girl was going back home after school.
The girl boarded the bus from East Fort to reach house and the accused, who was standing behind her in the bus, lifted her skirt with an intention to sexually harass her.
The girl then made noise and the other passengers in the bus handed him over to the police.
A passenger who saw the crime became a witness in the case and was deposed along with 12 other witnesses.
The period during which the accused spent time in jail during the trial was reduced from the jail term imposed.
