THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a horrifying incident, an unidentified man walked into a village office located outside the city and detonated a bomb, injuring at least five people, including four revenue officials. The incident occurred in Vellarada Village office located at Anappara near Vellarada, approximately 40 kilometers from the city.
The injured includes Village Officer Prabhakaran, Village Assistant Venugopan, two other staff and a visitor.
Venugopan, who suffered burns on face and hands, is learned to be in serious condition. He has been admitted to Medical COllege Hospital. The injuries of others are not so serious, according to sources.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.30am. A young man wearing a helmet and an overcoat, walked into the office and placed a box on the village officer's table. He then uttered the words ''Ninakkokke Kanichu Tharameda", which in translation meant, I will show you all. Following this, he dropped the box on to the floor. The box broke open, spreading a liquid substance inside, suspected to be petrol, all over the floor. He then threw a lighted match stick on to the floor, starting the fire.
Eye witnesses told the cops that even the shoes of the assailant caught fire. However, he walked out of the office in a calm manner, went to a public water tap located outside the office and doused the fire using the tap water. He then disappeared. People failed to apprehend him in the rush to save the people inside the office.
The office has suffered considerable damage in the form of burned computers and also several files.
The police have launched a probe to find out the culprit and also the reason behind the attack.
