THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A UP native was punished for five years’ rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a woman cleaning staff of Railways. The incident took place inside the bogey of Thiruvananthapuram-Hyderabad Sabari Express at Central Railway Station Thampanoor in 2014.
The additional sessions and district court in charge of atrocities and sexual offenses against women and children on Monday ordered five year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 30,000 for 31-year-old Santhosh Kumar, son of Rajendra Singh, from Khannauj of UP.
If he fails to pay fine, the culprit will have to face another 1 month jail term, judge P K Minimol ordered.
The incident took place at 2am on March 25, 2014. The victim, who was 50-years-old then, was sexually assaulted when she entered the Sabari Express for cleaning. Kumar was the pantry staff of the train. Though the women managed to escape, she suffered injuries in her head and was bitten on her hand.
On the complaint of the victim, Kumar was arrested by Railway Police and has been incarcerated ever since. He should serve the remaining term at jail. Special public prosecutor Kovalam C Suresh Chandrakumar appeared on court on behalf of prosecution.
