29th IFFK to kick off today, 10 films on opening day

T'puram: The 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) kicks off on Friday with an lineup of 10 films on its opening day. The selection includes six titles in the World Cinema category, two from the Female Gaze section, one in the Latin American package, and a special screening of a film by Ann Hui, the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.Opening Ceremony & Feature Film: The festival will officially begin with the screening of ‘I Am Still Here' by acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles. The opening ceremony will take place at 6pm on Friday at Nishagandhi Auditorium.Highlights of Day One: ‘July Rhapsody' by Ann Hui: Screening at 10am in Nila Theatre, this film delves into a teacher's midlife crisis, navigating themes of abuse, love, and emotional entrapment. Ann Hui, known for her nuanced storytelling, will also receive the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award.‘Shahid' by Narges Kalhor: Showing at 10am in Kairali Theatre, this bold political comedy follows a protagonist's struggle to remove ‘Shahid' (meaning martyr) from her name, exploring themes of bureaucracy, personal identity, and societal expectations.‘Formosa Beach' by Julia De Simone: Screening at 10.15am in Sree Theatre, this time-bending narrative follows Muanza, who escapes slavery in 19th-century Brazil, only to wake up in a modern and surreal Rio de Janeiro.‘When the Phone Rang' by Iva Radivojevic: Part of the Female Gaze category, this emotionally resonant Serbian-American film will be screened at 12.30pm in Kairali Theatre. It captures the fragmented memories and emotional turmoil of displacement.‘Anna & Dante' by Carlos Mares González: Featured in the Latin American category, this heartfelt exploration of human relationships and cultural connections will be screened at 12pm in Kalabhavan Theatre.
