Thane: City basketball players formed a major chunk in the Maharashtra under-17 boys’ and girls’ teams that fought the 19
th ASISC (Association of Schools for Indian School Certificate) national basketball championship held at Ahmedabad.
While boys’ team emerged all India champion, girls squad finished runners-up. Ten out of 24 players from state boys’ and girls’ teams were from Thane.
On the other hand, the under-19 boys’ and girls’ teams, in which Thane had a fair share with three players in the playing twelve, certainly played well but were opted out before the semifinals.
Hiranandani Foundation School (HFS), Smt Sulochanadevi Singhania School and Billabong School were the major contributors on the state contingent. The under-17 boys’ team had five players from the lake city including its captain Jay Patil that led to win the all India title.
They included Saurav Agarwal (HFS), Jay Patil, Rubin Geogre, Dhruv Nakhwa—from Singhania—and Yash Shetty from Billabong School.
