Three years back, speed breakers were removed from city roads. Now the Thane Shiv Sena is demanding that Thane Municipal Corporation (
TMC) rebuild new speed breakers near city hospitals, schools, courts, colleges and on busy roads. The party insists that the city is in urgent need of urgent speed breakers going by the Mumbai High Court's 2005 order.
The Sena members claimed that the speed breakers were earlier removed by flouting norms issued by the Bombay High Court in its 2005 orders.
The matter came to light when Ramesh Vaity, deputy chief of Thane Shiv Sena cell, asked the civic body to build the speed breakers. "Bombay High Court 2005 order mentions that speed breakers are allowed only near select places like city schools, colleges, hospitals and busy roads. But we found that they were removed almost three years back from these places with utter disregard to Mumbai High Court orders. Now we demanded that they be urgently reinstated near some sensitive areas of the city," informed Vaity.
Ramesh Vaity added, "We asked TMC Mayor Ashok Vaity to consider our demand and we have received good response from him. The mayor has asked for a list of places where there is urgent need for speed breakers. He promised that he will start the work on it very soon."
"We have also asked the civic body to state specific dimensions for speed breakers. Ideally speaking, the speed breaker should be at least of 2 feet in breadth and 4 inches in height. We asked for specific measurements as we found out that a number of speed breakers in the city are either broader or taller than the specified height. These uneven speed breakers can cause inconvenience to small vehicles especially two-wheelers and four wheelers that are smaller in height."
Ashok Vaity, Mayor, Thane Municipal Corporation informed, "There is need for speed breakers in some places in the city as it is a question of safety for our citizens. We have asked the city engineer department to give us a list of places that need speed breakers urgently. We expect the list to be ready in three to four days."
Ratan Awasarmol, assistant city engineer, TMC, informed, "We received orders from the Mayor on December 9. We started work on it and asked all nine ward offices to give us details about schools, hospitals, colleges and other places from their wards. Once we receive all information, we will select some places and ask for primary approval from the civic body. Then we will require Thane traffic police to give us No Objection Certificates (NOC) to raise these speed breakers."
Sudhir Dabhade, deputy commissioner of police, traffic branch, agreed that there is need of speed breakers in some areas and he is ready to support the civic action. "We will provide NOC after the civic body has given us details about the require speed breakers. We will first confirm the need and then its specification of construction and give the go-ahead," Dabhade informed.
