THANE: The murder accused arrested in the murder case of a journalist reportedly escaped from the custody of UP police near Khandwa railway station while he was taken back to UP, a source from Thane police confirmed.
The accused Jamiruddin Qureshi (48) was arrested for the murder of Ashutosh Shrivastav (43), a journalist with a news channel at Jaunpur on Monday.
Qureshi, after the incident fled Jaunpur and was holed up in Bhiwandi. The UP received a tip-off of his location and thus the police sought assistance from the Thane police to nab him. The anti-extortion cell of Thane crime branch was assigned the task who then arrested him from Bhiwandi., said an official.
The Thane police after completing the legal formalities handed him to the UP police team consisting of a Sub-inspector and a constable who were camping in Thane. The UP police secured a transit remand from the local court and had taken the railway route to reach Jaunpur, said a police officer.
But as their express train approached the Khandwa railway station, Qureshi reportedly used the pretext of using the restroom to jump off the moving train and escape. According to a police officer, Qureshi jumped when the train slowed down, the officer informed.
The UP police alighted at the next railway station and along with the MP police have launched the manhunt to nab him, said a police officer.
