THANE: A fire broke out at a cafe in a multi-storey residential building in Thane, Maharashtra, on Thursday morning, prompting the evacuation of 35 people, officials said.
No casualties have been reported so far, Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said.
The fire started at Parsik Cafe, located on the ground floor of a six-storey building in Kharegaon, Kalwa (West), he said.
The disaster management cell was alerted about the incident at 4:58 am by the café’s owner. The 1,000 sq ft establishment is part of the Chandrabhaga Park complex in Parsik Nagar, Kalwa, the official added.
The building also has another wing, where residents were asleep at the time the blaze broke out.
"For safety reasons, all residents of Chandrabhaga Park B Wing were safely evacuated with the help of the fire department and disaster management cell personnel," Tadvi stated.
The blaze caused extensive damage inside the café, gutting tables, chairs, grates, refrigerators, cupboards, and other kitchen equipment, the official said.
Fire tenders were promptly dispatched to the spot, and the flames were brought under control by 6:25 am, he added.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire, he added.
