THANE: As many as 20 minor boys hailing from Bihar were rescued by the Thane Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Monday morning from Raxaul LTT Express. Last week too, 19 children were resuced from the same train and at the same time.
Am NGO received a tip-off that the kids were being brought into the city to be pushed into child labour. The NGO informed the police. The Thane police unit searched every compartment of the 24-coach train. There were 32 children on the train and everyone was brought in for questioning. After interrogation, 12 kids were found to be travelling with their parents and were allowed to go. However, the remaining did not give a proper justification and were detained.
The kids were rescued and 14 people who were escorting them were arrested. They have been charged under the Juvenile Justice Act.
‘‘We received a complaint from a social activist about minors likely to be pushed into child labour being brought into by a Mumbai-bound train. ’’ said Dinesh Nair, senior inspector.
