Ukai dam levels still depleted, despite good spell of rains

SURAT: With the continuous inflow of water in Ukai reservoir , the levels of Ukai dam on Tapi river has risen by 1.5 feet in last 48 hours. At present the levels at Ukai dam were recorded at 285.51 feet which is still 37.09 feet below the rule level of the day fixed by dam authorities. Last five days have witnessed heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas of Ukai dam has witnessed Hathnoor dam levels reaching 210 meters. As a result , dam authorities there started releasing 10,000 Cusecs of water . Along with that water, heavy rains in the catchment areas of Tapi river between Hathnoor and Ukai , resulted in inflow of water in Ukai dam reached nearly 34,000 Cusecs. However, a moderate rate of rainfall since Tuesday day has again reduced the inflow of water in dam and at present inflow of water is recorded at 9723 cusecs.


An official at Ukai dam said, “ In the last decade we have not seen such depleted situation of water in Ukai dam and unless it rains heavily during the month of July in upper catchments of Tapi river, we are unlikely to reach the prescribed levels of 335 feet by August 01, 2016.”
However , an official from Central water commission said, “ Even during the weak year, we have been getting maximum water in Ukai reservoir during the peak months of July-August . So , we expect good amount of water to flow in the river reservoir this year as good monsoon is projected.”
