Police to act against noise polluters ahead of exams

Surat: City police will start taking strict action against those causing noise pollution at night ahead of exams in schools and colleges. Police received information from various areas that the use of loudspeakers disturbed citizens, especially during at night when students prepare.City police commissioner Anupamsingh Gahlaut issued a notification prohibiting loud noise and reiterated that it is punishable. In residential areas, the maximum sound limit is 55 decibels from 6am to 10pm, while at night the limit is 45 decibels. In industrial areas, it is 75 decibels in the day and 70 decibels at night. In commercial areas, it is 65 decibels in the day and 55 decibels at night. In silent zones, it is 50 decibels in the day and 40 decibels at night."It came to the knowledge of police that in some residential areas loud noise created issues for residents, especially for students. The most common complaints are about DJ performances at weddings," said Panna Momaya, deputy commissioner of police.Along with loud music, police will also take action against vehicles causing noise pollution at night. Police will keep watch at locations where the movement of heavy vehicles is regular round the clock. At these places, police will encourage drivers to avoid using loud horns."Police teams will reach spots where a complaint has come from. Citizens can call the control room to report violations of the sound limit, and police will take action quickly," she added.Police will also act against wedding processions in which loud DJ sound systems are used on public roads. Police will ensure during the wedding season that traffic is not affectted by processions, creating trouble for students going to take exams.At CBSE schools, annual exams are to start by the end of this month, and soon after that, the state board exams and college exams will begin.
