SURAT: Sexual abuse of a 17-year-old school-going girl by three miscreants in a four-wheeler while plying through the main thoroughfares of city on Friday morning has shocked Surtis. For, the city is considered safest for the fairer sex.
The manner in which the heinous crime was committed by perpetrators was disturbing enough for Piplod resident Rakesh Kumar, a father of two young children.

"The city is known for being safe and secure for women. But, this incident near Majura Gate indicates the deteriorating overall situation," Kumar said.
Never before in the recent history of this city a girl has been picked up like this and sexually abused, said Geeta Shroff of Apmrutyu Nivaran Sahaya (ANIS), a social organisation working for the welfare of women.
"Along with other women's organisations, we submitted a memorandum to the city police, urging them to punish the culprits in a manner which could be a deterrent for anti-social elements," said Shroff. In fact, denizens now need to be more vigilant in the wake of deteriorating law and order situation, said Adajan resident and a mother of two teenage daughters Prabha Desai.
"In this case, audacity on the part of culprits amply belies our trust in law enforcing agencies. If deterioration in law and order is not checked, the city will lose its tag of being safe," said another local resident Ketan Shinde.
Many areas, including the place from where the victim was taken away by the accused trio in their vehicle, have, of late, become notorious during evening and night hours for flesh trade, according to local residents of Majura Gate.

Come evening and many sex workers are seen soliciting customers in full public view in-and-around Majura Gate and surprisingly, local police officials have failed to take note of this social evil, remarked a number of denizens residing nearby.
"We need to have a strong citizens' group to voice our concerns related to city's life, including law and order situation, so that concerned agencies are forced to be pro-active to keep the city safe," Kumar opined.
