Rakesh Asthana cracked down on a gambling den near Fort on Friday.
According to police sources, the local police were kept out of the loop and senior police officials supervised the raids. The said den was located in middle of the city. Police arrested eight accused and have seized Rs 6.42 lakh worth valuables and cash.
The gambling den was located on Tapi riverbed in Athwa police station area in a hut behind the historic Surat fort.
In the operation Athwa police station officers were kept out of the loop. SRP jawans and police inspector posted on administrative duties were roped in. On Wednesday police had carried out three raids at different places but failed to arrest any accused. Following the failure in operations the raid strategy was changed on Friday and it was carried out with limited number of staff without involving the local police station staff.
