Two ‘dacoits’ beaten to death by mob in Meghalaya

Shillong: Two suspected dacoits were detained and beaten to death by a mob in a village in South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya while another was seriously injured in the attack, police said on Monday.On receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the Jaluagre (Mangsang Gittim) village and rescued the victims. However, two of them, identified as Balen G Sangma (30) and Sken D Shira (30) succumbed to their injuries. The third person, identified as Betuwel D Shira (22), was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Tura, SP Vikash Kumar said.The SP said two of the individuals involved had criminal antecedents, having been arrested previously for offences including murder, kidnapping for ransom, extortion and violations of the Arms Act in South West Garo Hills District.Police have recovered and seized a Maruti 800 car, wood and bamboo stained with blood, a damaged mobile handset, a ‘khukhri’ (dagger), a damaged wristwatch, a seal of the ‘chairman’ of United Garo People Forum (UGPF), various identity cards, cash amounting to Rs1,700, and a notebook containing the names of UGPF office-bearers from the place of the incident. A case has been registered in this regard with the Ampati police station.
