Speaker: Decorum of Meghalaya House is always maintained

Shillong: There has never been any pandemonium in the Meghalaya legislative assembly, which is known for its decorum, speaker Thomas A Sangma said on Saturday. He was addressing the inaugural session of the 84th All India Presiding Officers’ Conference on the Maharashtra assembly premises in Mumbai.
“We do not experience any pandemonium or rushing to the well of the house with placards but only occasional walkouts by some members,” he said.
“Fortunately, debates and discussions in the Meghalaya assembly are always held in a decent manner with occasional heated exchanges, but the decorum of the house is always maintained,” he added.
He said creating unruly scenes does not give a good impression to the public. “Nowadays, we can see members rushing to the well of the house, disobeying rulings of the presiding officer, which is unfortunate and does not augur well for parliamentary democracy,” the speaker said.
