No ban on tourist cabs from Assam in Meghalaya, says Conrad govt
Shillong: Meghalaya govt on Thursday asserted that there was no move to ban tourist vehicles from Assam from entering Meghalaya, putting speculations to rest.
Addressing the media here on Thursday, state tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh said there are regular visitors from Meghalaya to Assam and the govt intends to maintain a balance as far as the entry of tourist vehicles from outside to Meghalaya is concerned. Lyngdoh said a meeting will be called with all the stakeholders for further discussion on the matter.
The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association has urged the state govt to ban tourist vehicles from Assam and other parts of the country from entering tourist destinations in Meghalaya except for state capital Shillong. According to the association, such a ban would protect the income of local taxi drivers in Meghalaya.
However, Meghalaya Police has clarified that there were no restrictions on tourist vehicles registered in Assam from visiting tourist spots in the hill state. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police stated that the information circulating across social media on the matter were “completely baseless”, urging the public not to fall prey to misinformation.
