Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
Famed for its rock-cut architecture and stunning stone carvings, Mahabalipuram showcases the Pallava dynasty's artistic genius. Iconic structures like the Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas are marvels of Dravidian architecture.
Brihadeeswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu
This 11th-century temple, in Thanjavur, is an architectural masterpiece built during the Chola dynasty. Its towering vimana (temple tower) and intricate sculptures highlight the grandeur of Tamil temple architecture. It’s one of the country’s largest temples, and is also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was built by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola I. Along with the Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple and Airavastesvara Temple, the complex is regarded as one of the three ‘Great Living Chola Temples’ and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Hampi, Karnataka
The ruins of Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, transport visitors to an era of prosperity and cultural brilliance. The site is dotted with breathtaking structures like the Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple with its iconic stone chariot, and numerous monuments scattered across the landscape.
Group of Monuments at Pattadakal, Karnataka
Pattadakal showcases Chalukyan art and architecture brilliantly. This UNESCO site is a beautiful blend of Dravidian and Nagara styles, with highlights like the Virupaksha Temple and Mallikarjuna Temple.It features a Jain sanctuary and an incredible set of nine Hindu temples. One of the group's masterpieces, the Temple of Virupaksha, was built by Queen Lokamahadevi to honour her husband's conquest of the Southern rulers.
Western Ghats
The Western Ghats, spread across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, are a biodiversity hotspot. The lush mountain range is home to numerous endemic species, tea plantations, and protected reserves like the Periyar and Silent Valley National Parks.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Tamil Nadu
