Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), one of the three tribal governing councils in the state on Saturday passed a resolution opposing the uniform civil code (UCC), contending that it would hamper the traditions and customary laws of the indigenous people.
The newly elected chief executive member (CEM) of the KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem moved the resolution on the first day of the
budget session of the Council, opposing the move of the Central government to implement the UCC across the country.
After tabling the resolution, Syiem said the UCC would dilute the customs, traditional practices, inheritance, matrimonial rules and religious freedom of the indigenous community.
“Therefore, this House resolves to urge the Government of India not to implement uniform civil code within the jurisdiction of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in order to safeguard and protect our interest as provided under the sixth schedule to the Indian Constitution,” the executive head of the Council read out.
Deputy CEM and veteran member of the KHADC, Bindo Lanong also extended his support to the resolution opposing the UCC. Leader of opposition in the KHADC, Titosstarwell Chyne also extended his support and maintained that the UCC, if implemented, would adversely affect the customary practices of the indigenous people.
