Fire breaks out in Meghalaya’s Police Bazar, 1 dies

Shillong: A massive fire broke out in a building of the main commercial hub of Police Bazar (Khyndailad) here on Saturday afternoon, in which one person died and several others were injured. SP (East Khasi Hills) Sylvester Nongtynger confirmed that the cause of death of a man was asphyxiation.
Firefighters and the central forces were engaged in dousing the fire well into the evening till the filing of this report.
Fire first broke out in a furniture shop (old video parlour) at Thana Road and quickly spread to nearby Singhania complex close to the old Payal cinema hall, police said. A fortnight ago there was a fire at Keating Road, a commercial-cum-residential area in the city.
As per preliminary reports, the blast of an LPG cylinder, triggered by an electricity malfunction appears to be the reason for the fire at Thana Road, though this was yet to be confirmed by police who have launched a probe into the matter.tnn
