Conrad treks to inspect Um-Jasai water level

Shillong: CM Conrad K Sangma undertook an hour-long trek on Saturday morning to reach the Um-Jasai catchment area in Shillong and inspected the water level as the state continued to reel under a dry spell. Officials from PHE, urban affairs departments, and the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority also accompanied the CM.“We have inspected the Um-Jasai catchment area in Shillong to understand the measures we have taken so far to protect and rejuvenate the water sources. At present, the state is witnessing a water crisis due to the ongoing dry spell. The govt has initiated several measures to deal with the situation. Let us all come together as citizens of the state to conserve and protect our water bodies,” the CM said.Though Meghalaya receives the highest rainfall, the onset of the dry season has affected Shillong city and other towns.“We are going through challenging times, but we should be able to improve the overall situation in the coming years,” the CM said.“In the past one year, the govt has taken several initiatives to rejuvenate the streams, springs and rivers in the state,” he added.“Apart from big infrastructure projects to provide water, the govt has also prioritised protection and conservation of catchment areas. We should rejuvenate different water bodies in the state and store water as far as possible using different methods like rainwater harvesting, recharging of groundwater tubewells,” he said, urging citizens to conserve water.
