BSF thwarts sugar smuggling bid in South Garo Hills

Shillong: Over 33,000 kg of sugar was seized by the troops of BSF Meghalaya and the state police in a joint operation in South Garo Hills district along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh international border in the last two days.“The sugar was intended for smuggling into Bangladesh,” a statement issued by the Meghalaya Frontier Headquarters of the BSF here said on Monday.“The operation led to the successful seizure of a large quantity of sugar, which had been stockpiled in an abandoned house near the Rongra bordering area,” it added.In yet another operation, a mobile check post party of BSF intercepted a truck near Baghmara on Monday, which was suspected of carrying a large quantity of sugar meant for smuggling into Bangladesh. “Upon being intercepted, the driver and co-driver fled the scene under the cover of darkness,” the BSF said, adding that the seized bags of sugar have been handed over to the local police post.

Villager killed in BSF firing in Meghalaya

A villager, Asen M Marak, was shot dead by BSF in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills close to the Indo-Bangladesh border on Friday. No FIR was registered. Autopsy and probe were underway. The incident occurred during a confrontation, and BSF fired gunshots on the mob.

Centre reschedules sugar mill loans for 7-year repayment

The Centre has restructured the repayment of Rs 1,378 crore outstanding loans of sugar mills, extending the period to seven years. Maharashtra has the largest outstanding amount of Rs 861 crore, while Gujarat has the smallest amount of Rs 39 crore.
