Bangla leader’s body may have been dumped inside India: Tynsong

Shillong: Deputy chief minister in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said there was a possibility of Bangladesh’s Awami League leader Ishaque Ali Khan Panna’s body being dumped inside Indian territory after being killed on the other side of the border. He added that the Meghalaya govt was awaiting direction from the Centre on the steps to be taken regarding the decomposed body.
The decomposed body of Panna was first discovered by the villagers on August 26 in an areca-nut plantation at Dona Bhoi village of East Jaiñtia Hills district. Meghalaya Police could identify that the body was that of Panna based on the Bangladeshi passport which was found on the body.
“There are possibilities of the Bangladeshi leader’s body being dumped into Indian territory,” Tynsong told reporters and pointed out that the incident took place at a time when the Meghalaya government has imposed night curfew along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent any illegal crossing over from Bangladesh to India.
“Bangladesh had claimed that Panna was trying to escape to India. However, the Border Security Force verified it and said it is not like that. But ultimately after 2-3 days, his body was found around 1.2 or 1.3 km inside the Indian territory,” the deputy CM said, further revealing that the post-mortem report indicated that Panna was killed.
The Meghalaya govt has directed the conduct of forensic tests to ascertain facts regarding the matter, he said.
“All along the international border, night curfew was imposed and till today, we will continue to do that from evening till early morning. We have instructed, be it from the police side or be it from the BSF side, they have to do their duty to make sure that no one crosses over from Bangladesh to India,” he said.
“The ministry of external affairs and ministry of home affairs are taking care of everything and our responsibility as state government is only to hand over the dead body to the family members concerned once they reach Meghalaya,” Tynsong said.
The Meghalaya govt has informed the high commissioners of Bangladesh and India with regard to the discovery of the body. “Now, we are waiting from the MHA what step is to be taken next,” he said.
